How to Choose the Right Rivet Press

How to Choose the Right Spindle Press for Your Artisans Studio: A Complete Buying Guide

A spindle press, also known as a hand press or rivet press, is an essential tool for any studio.
Whether you’re working with leather, fabric, or other materials, a spindle press is ideal for creating holes, setting eyelets, hollow rivets,
snaps, ski hooks, and more. While manual tools like loose punches and pliers work for occasional use, there comes a time when investing in a spindle press is the most efficient choice.

In this article, we’ll guide you through the factors to consider when purchasing a spindle press, helping you make an informed decision for your specific needs.

Why You Need a Spindle Press in Your Workshop

If you’ve been working with materials like leather, fabric, or metal, you know how important precision is. Whether you’re making belts, bags, shoes, or accessories, a spindle press significantly improves the speed and accuracy of your work. A well-chosen press helps you achieve consistent results with less effort.
When should you consider upgrading to a spindle press? If you regularly need to:
  • Make holes or eyelets with consistent depth and pressure
  • Install rivets, snaps, or hooks quickly and efficiently
  • Avoid the physical strain of using manual tools
A spindle press offers a reliable solution, allowing you to tackle repetitive tasks with precision and ease.

Understanding the Different Types of Spindle Presses

There are two main types of spindle presses to consider:
  1. Spindle-based press: This is the most common model. It features a threaded spindle with a handle that you rotate to move the press head up and down. The spindle allows for precise control, making it suitable for a variety of tasks like installing rivets, eyelets, and snaps.
  2. Lever press: Instead of a spindle, this model uses a lever mechanism to generate downward pressure. It's often used by professionals in industries like sailmaking and signage, but it can be harder to control the pressure, potentially leading to over-pressing or deforming delicate materials.
When choosing between the two, consider the type of work you’ll be doing. For tasks requiring fine control and consistent pressure, the spindle press is usually the better option.

Which Size Spindle Press Do You Need?

Spindle presses come in different sizes, typically ranging from size 2 to 6, with size 2 being the smallest and size 6 being the largest.
The size of the press primarily affects its working depth—how far you can insert your material into the press—and the spacing between the tools.
  • Size 2: Ideal for smaller projects like belts or small leather goods.
  • Size 3: Works well for medium-sized projects.
  • Size 4: The most popular choice for bags, clothing, and larger leather products.
  • Size 5 and 6: Suitable for larger, industrial-scale operations where deep pressing is required.
For most hobbyists or small business owners, a size 3 or 4 press will likely be sufficient. Size 4 is particularly popular in industries like bag-making and garment manufacturing.

Key Features to Look for When Buying a Spindle Press

When purchasing a spindle press, consider these key factors to ensure you're making the best investment:
  1. Threading and Compatibility: Ensure the press has universal threading for inserts. Most presses use a standard 6.3 mm (6 mm) thread for the top and a 12 mm thread for the foot insert. Some Chinese models may use 8 mm threading, which could limit your access to compatible tools in Europe.
  2. Build Quality: Spindle presses are typically made from solid iron, which is durable and long-lasting. Look for a press that offers good stability and is rust-resistant. Always store your press in a dry space to prevent rust formation.
  3. Ease of Use: Look for a press that’s easy to mount and use. Many presses can be mounted on a workbench with wing nuts, making it easy to remove the press when not in use. The weight of a spindle press typically ranges from 3 to 6 kg, so ensure that your workbench is sturdy enough to handle the weight.

What Is the Price Range for Spindle Presses?

When you start shopping for a spindle press, you'll notice a wide range of prices. While price differences exist, they don't necessarily reflect differences in quality,
as most spindle presses are simple, durable machines with few moving parts. The main variable that affects pricing is the finish (paint quality) and additional features.

Prices can vary, but don’t let the lower prices fool you. Always prioritize the size and compatibility of the press with your existing tools.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision

Choosing the right spindle press can enhance the quality and efficiency of your work, whether you're a hobbyist or a professional. To summarize:

  • Look for a universal thread size: The standard size for the top insert is 6.3 mm (6 mm), and for the foot, it’s 12 mm.
  • Consider the size and working depth you need based on your projects.
  • Choose a durable, rust-resistant model made from solid materials.
  • Think about ease of use and mounting options for your workspace.
By understanding these factors, you'll be well on your way to choosing the perfect spindle press for your workshop.

Alvast hartelijk dank. Groet, José
